My name is Vicky Stokes and I’m a Walmajarri woman living in Mindi Rardi community near Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. I went to high school in Perth and then came back to Fitzroy Crossing to work at the old school. After that I went to barber college and then married in Perth and lived down in the goldfields for 20 years. I come from a creative family. My mum used to paint at Mangkaja Arts in Fitzroy Crossing and my mum’s cousin Jimmy Pike was a famous painter. In 2013 I started painting at the Social Enterprise Studio. I come to the studio every day. I like to create new things; whatever new things come to my mind. The main thing I like to paint is bush tucker. I remember back to the old days when our parents used to take us fishing and hunting and teach us about the bush foods and medicine on the land and in the river.
